Abstract
Portal hypertension is a rare disease in childhood. In the majority of instances, portal hypertension occurs secondary to extrahepatic block caused by portal vein thrombosis while cirrhosis causing an intrahepatic block is seen less frequently, especially in children. We experienced 2 cases of portal hypertension secondary to cirrhosis of liver in 12 and 14 year old boys who had suffered from longstanding ascites, nasal bleeding and huge palpable mass on his LUQ of abdomen. They were treated by splenectomy without shunt operation.
They were discharged without hypertension but jaundice and ascites were remained thereafter. We report these cases and made a review of literatures.
